Swimming is a favorite pastime for all of us. As the warm summer months come upon us, it’s hard to resist jumping in a pool or swimming throughout a lake. Swimming has been known to be one of the best ways to use all of our main muscles throughout our body. As we swim through water our weight is displaced and becomes the perfect activity especially for overweight people. The activity is not only easy on the joints it can bring about a good relaxed feeling when enjoying the water. That said, research shows that nearly 70 percent of regular swimmers have experience what is called swimmer’s shoulder.
What Is It?
Swimmers shoulder is basically a muscular-skeletal injury that comes about when we overuse our shoulders swimming. One can experience a wide range of injuries as the shoulder is used in various movements and complex joint shifting. Pain can range from mild discomfort during a training session to a bigger debilitating issue when the pain can actually stop a swimmer from training. Pain can travel from the shoulder then to the neck and also in our arms. What specifically happens is there is an acute inflammation that causes the discomfort and pain.

Swimmer’s shoulder is basically caused by the overuse of what is called the supraspinatus tendon. It is often caused because there’s a lack of technique when a person is performing swimming strokes and results in over extension of the tendon. This can lead to joint instability and you most likely will experience pain while swimming with shoulder injury. Once you take your arm out of the water there is a loss of blood in the tendon during the full action of a stroke which creates an increase of overusing that muscle.

With these types of injuries one must engage in pain management and seek medical attention. If you wait too long the pain can set in and inflammation can begin to build in your muscles. There are specific techniques that you can use to prevent swimmer’s shoulder that will actually fix and solve the problem. It’s best to work on your posture, change your technique or try sleeping on your back. It’s also recommended to use an ice pack on your shoulder for at least 10 minutes during the day to alleviate the inflammation and pain.
